On long-distance routes, the Audi e-tron Sportback can charge with direct current (DC) at up to 150 kW at fast-charging stations. In just under half an hour, the battery reaches 80 percent of its capacity—sufficient for the next leg of its long-distance trip.
The battery sits deep in the bottom of the Audi e-tron between the two axels as a flat block. It is made up of 36 cell modules the size of shoe boxes, each of which houses twelve “pouch” cells.

(57.0 cu ft. seats down), equipping the electric SUV for short jaunts and long road trips.
The thermal management system aims to get the battery up to the ideal temperature range of around 30 degrees Celsius quickly after it is started and to keep it there until the end of the journey. This ensures that its full power – and therefore the power of the entire drive system – is available after a short time even in extremely cold conditions. Thanks to the stable thermal conditions, the driver can also call on it repeatedly or charge the battery at an HPC charging terminal with high output. The sophisticated thermal management system also gives the battery a long life cycle – Audi guarantees that it will still have at least 70 percent capacity after eight years of operation or after 160,000 kilometers.
The inner structure of the battery that contains the modules, the frame surrounding it, and the cover plates are made of lightweight aluminum. The battery system contributes significantly to the rigidity and crash safety of the body to which it is attached via 28 screws. Beneath its cell space there is a compound structure of flat extruded sections through which coolant flows that circulates in its own low-temperature circuit. The battery’s feel-good temperature is between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius.
