Why VW's Ad Agency Review Could Impact Ford

Interpublic's Deutsch has lost the Volkswagen creative account in the U.S. as the automaker nears the end of its global agency review. Automotive News reports WPP, Publicis Groupe and Omnicom have all pitched for the business, which was put into review in April. The shop's elimination could signal that VW wants to consolidate larger portions of its business with one or two holding companies. Omnicom's DDB already handles major portions of the VW business in Europe and Canada. WPP has traditionally observed an exclusivity arrangement with Ford Motor Co., meaning that it must get the automaker's approval to pitch other automotive accounts.

  • Review: VW's New Atlas SUV Provides Tough Competition For Ford, Toyota

Simply put, America has an insatiable appetite for sports utility vehicle. In fact, 40% of all vehicles sold in the United States in July, 2017, were crossovers and SUVs. Trying to get its footing back in the American market after its emissions test-cheating software debacle, the Volkswagen Atlas is VW's new flagship SUV, and is designed to conquer the US market. According to Business Insider, it's roomy, comfortable, and feels like a German take on the Ford Explorer. However, the interior fit and finish of the Atlas leaves a bit to be desired, as some pieces in a barely used model already showed some wear. That's not a good sign for a vehicle that needs to survive the rough and tumble life of a family hauler. And then there's price. The standard four-cylinder Atlas's opening price of $30,500 is aimed directly at the Ford Explorer's and the Toyota Highlander's starting sticker prices. But a fully-loaded, top-of-the-line V6 SEL Premium will leave the showroom at $49,415. Fifty grand for an SUV is a big chunk of change, so Volkswagen will have to do some hard marketing to get these off the lot.
