Volkswagen Hit With $926 Million Fine Over Audi Diesel Emission Cheating

Description

Volkswagen is once again counting the cost of cheating on diesel engine emissions tests. The German carmaker said Tuesday that it had been hit with a new fine relating to failings at its Audi subsidiary. Munich prosecutors on Tuesday imposed a fine of $926 million on Audi. Taking the total cost to the Volkswagen Group globally to $32.7 billion. That is equivalent to 12% of Volkswagen's annual sales last year. Volkswagen admitted in 2015 to cheating on clean air rules with software that made emissions look less toxic than they actually were.

  • Volkswagen Has Bounced Back To Profitability

Volkswagen is the world's largest carmaker. Business Insider reports the company returned to profit in the third quarter. This is thanks to surging demand for luxury cars such as Porsche and Audi in western Europe and China. VW's chief financial officer, Frank Witter, warned that "the coronavirus remains a central problem." VW said it's full-year 2020 profit would be "severely lower" than in 2019. The profits would still be in "positive territory" after a second-quarter loss of 1.7 billion euros ($1.99 billion). A series of cost-cutting measures launched earlier this year helped VW's performance during the third quarter.

  • Euro NCAP Assisted Driving Tests 2020

Euro NCAP announced the release of its second series of Highway Assist tests. To ensure the safe adoption of these and other assisted driving technologies by consumers, Euro NCAP has developed a dedicated test and assessment protocol, and a grading system. The latest test series includes ten cars that offer Highway Assist: the Audi Q8, the BMW 3 Series, the Ford Kuga, the Mercedes GLE, the Nissan Juke, the Peugeot 2008, the Renault Clio, the Tesla Model 3, the Volkswagen Passat and the Volvo V60.Increasingly, vehicle manufacturers have been making use of the sensor-sets fitted to their cars to provide more extensive driving support, paving the way for an autonomous future. A prime example is Highway Assist, a technology designed to make motorway driving safer by reducing fatigue and encouraging safe driving. Highway Assist helps the driver to maintain a steady speed, to keep a safe distance from the car in front and to keep the vehicle in the centre of the lane by combining (intelligent) Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Lane Centering (LC). However, the driver always needs to be responsible and engaged behind the wheel, and the assisted system is there to do just that – assist. They are not flawless and should not lead or have full control.
