Michael Bloomberg Gives $1.8 Billion To Johns Hopkins University

Description

Johns Hopkins University students may never have to worry about paying for college again. In a groundbreaking move, billionaire philanthropist Michael Bloomberg announced in a New York Times op-ed his plans to donate $1.8 billion to Johns Hopkins University. The Huffington Post reports that this is the largest donation ever to be made to a higher education institution. Bloomberg explains "I want to be sure that the school that gave me a chance will be able to permanently open that same door of opportunity for others...My Hopkins diploma opened up doors that otherwise would have been closed, and allowed me to live the American dream." The generous gift to his alma mater means that when it comes to admissions, the university will now be “need-blind,” meaning that applicants’ financial situations are only looked at after they’re accepted. The Baltimore university will also do away with student loans in Fall of 2019, replacing them all with scholarships. In the op-ed, Bloomberg also encouraged other schools broaden their financial aid offerings and explore partnerships with organizations like his CollegePoint foundation, which helps lower-income students apply to college.
