China blocks Australian coal at key port, raising tensions

China has reportedly started building up its military presence in the artificially-created islands, believed to be a region rich in oil and gas reserves. Several countries want a piece of the islands just north of Brunei, and the naval corridor is an important shipping route for Australian vessels.

    According to a report by Reuters, on Thursday, a spokesman for China's foreign ministry said that the customs administration will begin testing coal imports for reasons including environmental protection. Geng reportedly added that Chinese customs are conducting risk analysis according to the law. Spokesman Geng Shuang reportedly made the comments at a regular press briefing in response to a question about a ban on imports of Australian coal.Earlier, Reuters reported that China's northern port of Dalian had banned imports of Australian coal indefinitely.
