Gizmodo reports certain bacteria spread by cat scratches and other animal exposures can sometimes have a dramatic impact on the brain. A new study profiles a group of patients with psychiatric illness who simultaneously showed signs of infection from bacteria called Bartonella. Bartonella bacteria aren’t usually linked to serious illness in people. But certain groups, like those immunocompromised, might be more vulnerable generally. The rod-shaped Bartonella bacteria can survive and replicate inside other cells, much like viruses. This ability allows them to evade conventional tests for detecting infection and makes it harder for antibiotics to kill them. Bartonella henselae is the most commonly seen infection in humans and causes cat scratch disease--also called cat scratch fever. Despite the name, B. henselae and other disease-causing Bartonella can be spread through dogs and other mammals, and parasites like ticks, fleas, and lice. I
Russia is in an uproar after a health official said people shouldn't drink alcohol two weeks before and six weeks after getting the COVID-19 vaccine. According to Business Insider, there's no evidence that alcohol consumption is linked to Sputnik V's vaccine efficacy--or any other vaccine's efficacy. However, booze has been found to weaken the immune system. There is a waiting period of 21 days between the first and second Sputnik V shots. Having a strong immune system is especially important during a pandemic, so it may be wise to cut back on alcohol for that reason. The Russians have yet to release their complete, peer-reviewed data from phase 1 and 2 trials of Sputnik V, creating an air of secrecy around the vaccine.
So far, just under 215,000 Americans have died from the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. But according to UPI, a new study says deaths of Americans that were linked to COVID-19 may have gone underreported by nearly 75,000. That's because either people delayed seeking treatment, or were too afraid to seek medical help during the pandemic. As a result, COVID-19 could have indirectly contributed to deaths from other illnesses like Alzheimer's disease, diabetes and heart disease. Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond examined death certificates for their tabulation. The found that of 225,530 excess deaths, 150,541, or 67%, were attributed to COVID-19 from March to July.
