Small Japanese Town Manages To Defuse Its Own Demographic Time Bomb

Description

Japan has been struggling with a burgeoning population of elderly people while its birth rate plunges. But according to CNN, one municipality managed to double its collective fertility rate in just a decade. The sleepy, southern, agricultural town Nagi, has become a success story. The lack of busy streets and crowds make it a great place to bring up children. But that's not the only perk. Nagi also pays couples who live there to have children! Families receive $879 for their first child, $1,335 for their second, and as much as $3,518 for the fifth child. Other perks include subsidized housing, free vaccinations, school allowances and reduced nursery costs. And the strategy's working! Most couples in Nagi have three or more children because they want to--and can.
