Florida's Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel has been suspended by Gov. Ron DeSantis. According to Newser, Israel was Sheriff during the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Governor DeSantis tweeted Friday afternoon that Israel was removed from his post for "repeated failures, incompetence and neglect of duty, adding that Israel "has repeatedly failed and has demonstrated a pattern of poor leadership.

  • DNA Leads to Mother's Arrest in 2003 Slaying of Twins

    In 2003, newborn twin boys were found abandoned in a garbage can. The mother was never found. Now, Cook County sheriff's detectives have arrested and charged the boys' mother, 41-year-old Antoinette Briley, with two counts of first-degree murder. DNA tracing led to the identification of 41-year-old Antoinette Briley as the twins' birth mother. Law enforcement tailed Briley until they saw her drop a cigarette on the ground. They retrieved the cigarette and extracted the DNA from it. Briley says she gave birth to the twins in a bathtub, then placed them in a duffel bag to take to the hospital. En route, she abandoned them in the dumpster.
