According to Newser, the city of Chicago filed a lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court on Thursday, which sues Jussie Smollett. Smollett was cleared of charges that alleged that he staged a hate-crime based attack on himself and prosecutors dropped the 16 charges in March. But the city is suing the Empire actor in a civil trial for the cost of investigating the attack it claims he staged. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that civil trials have "a lower burden of proof." Court filings outline how Jussie allegedly staged the attack. The police claim that it started with a text to friend, Abel Osundairo, that said, "Might need your help on the low. You around to meet up and talk face to face?" Smollett reportedly told Osundairo that "he was unhappy with the way his employers handled a racist and homophobic letter he had allegedly received...he wanted to stage an attack where Abel would appear to batter him." The amount that the city of Chicago is seeking in damages is unknown.
