Facebook Bans Armed Rebel Groups

Description

Facebook made a major political move recently as turbulent ethnic clashes and a labyrinth of civil wars continue to plague Myanmar, Facebook banned four armed groups based in the country from using the platform. The decision was announced on Tuesday and came as part of a continuing effort to oust “dangerous organizations” promoting violence on the social network. Gizmodo reports Facebook has a sordid history in Myanmar as it’s been accused of falling short of readily preventing abuse of its platform that’s led to massive and ongoing violence. Both internally and publicly, Facebook officials including CEO Mark Zuckerberg have admitted they have been "too slow" in the last year when it comes to preventing posts stoking genocide in the southeast Asian nation.
