Putin Weighs In On Arms Race

Description

Russian President Vladimir Putin is in a tight spot. It is certain Putin cannot afford to engage in an expensive nuclear arms race with the US when his ratings are so low and state funds are needed to hedge against new Western sanctions and raise living standards. Due to alleged Russian violations, Washington announced this month it was forgoing its obligations under the INF and beginning the process of cancelling it, untying its hands to develop new missiles. Putin retaliated by saying Russia would mimic the U.S. moves by suspending its own obligations and quitting the pact. However Reuters reports Putin, who has been known to occasionally use bellicose rhetoric to boost Russia’s standoff with the West and to rally Russians round the flag, did not up the ante.
