NASA Twin Study Finds That Some Genes Change In Space

Description

According to Mother Nature Network, a NASA study found that prolonged time in space changes our genes. The first-of-its-kind study compared two astronauts, who happen to be twins. While now-retired astronaut Mark Kelly stayed on Earth, his brother Scott Kelly spent a year in orbit on the International Space Station. When he returned to Earth, NASA compared Scott's results to Mark's results. About 7-percent of Scott's genes changed, while his immune system was in a hyper-alert state. The specific genes that had lasting changes correlate with the immune system, bone formation, DNA repair, hypoxia, and hypercapnia. The last two are related to a deficiency in oxygen reaching tissues, and excessive carbon dioxide in the bloodstream.
