Autonomous Car Supporters Say Pedestrians Can Walk Better

Some self-driving car boosters are arguing that pedestrians don't know how to cross the street following the first pedestrian death attributed to an autonomous vehicle. In March, an Uber self-driving car killed a woman in Arizona who was walking a bicycle across the street at night outside a designated crosswalk. AutoNews.com reports the incident is still under investigation. A preliminary report from federal safety regulators said the car’s sensors had detected the woman but the software detected it as a false positive. Google affiliate Waymo has promised to launch a self-driving taxi service later this year. Elon Musk, however, has shelved his plans for autonomous Teslas. Researcher Andrew NG says that pedestrians can adjust, explaining, “If you look at the emergence of railroads, for the most part people have learned not to stand in front of a train on the tracks."

"General Motors has unveiled the Cruise AV, its first production-ready, fully autonomous car to be used for its driverless ride-hailing fleet in 2019. Based on the Chevrolet Bolt EV, it is a dedicated self-driving, pure electric sedan with no steering wheel or pedals. That means every seat is a passenger seat, and that the car relies on artificial intelligence and related technology to be the driver. This is the fourth-generation autonomous vehicle in 18 months that GM has developed with Cruise Automation, the company it bought in 2016. And it won’t be the last, said GM President Dan Ammann. The work started by retrofitting vehicles with lidar, sensors, and other equipment to read the surroundings and make drive decisions but the end goal was always a bespoke self-driving car."

Renault's Driverless EZ-GO Concept May Be the Future of Ride-Sharing

Renault revealed its new driverless concept vehicle called the EZ-GO at the Geneva International Motor Show on Tuesday. EZ-GO is a Level 4 driverless vehicle, so it can change lanes, turn at an intersection, and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of it. Users will be able to access the EZ-GO from an app or from fixed locations and will enter through a hatch which opens at the front of the vehicle, which also make the auto wheelchair accessible. The EZ-GO can accomodate up to 6 people at a time and features a U-shaped seating arrangement, making the ride a social experience.
