The United States has now recorded more than 13 million coronavirus cases. These cases representing around 4% of the country’s total population, according to HuffPost. The milestone means that the U.S. is now adding around 1 million new cases per week. This is an alarming reality as the Christmas and New Year’s holidays approach. The temptation to gather indoors with loved ones at the end of a difficult year is high. Millions traveled for Thanksgiving despite urging from public health experts not to do so.
Black Friday 2020 is next week. Business Insider reports that this year's Black Friday is shaping up to be unlike any that came before it. Several retailers are deemphasizing in-store shopping. Many retailers are opting for several, limited-time sales during the lead up to the big day. Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Kohl's, Macy's, Target, The Home Depot, and Walmart are currently offering several early Black Friday deals in stores and online.
Walmart has been one of the few companies to do well in the pandemic. Digital sales have nearly doubled from a year ago, and same-store sales have increased 9%. But according to Business Insider, even Walmart CEO Doug McMillon knows that with such widespread unemployment, its a streak of luck can't last forever. Business Insider reports McMillon said on CNBC's 'Squawk Box' on Thursday that Congress needs to pass a second stimulus package--and do it quickly. Since passing the $2.2 trillion CARES Act in March, Congress has done nothing meaningful towards passing a second stimulus package.
