Revealed to the public on February 9th at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show, the first MX-5 caused a sensation. Mazda’s engineers and designers had created a lightweight, compact, open-topped two-seater with a front-engine, rear-wheel drive format, front and rear double wishbone suspension, perfect 50:50 weight distribution, a low moment of inertia for maximum agility and an affordable price. It was an instant hit on a global scale. The secret of the MX-5’s success was in effortlessly bridging the generation gap. On the one hand, its appeal to those who had first-hand experience of the famous European sportscars in the 50s and 60s was instantaneous, on the other, it quickly won over a new generation of younger drivers who simply could not believe how much fun could be found in a small, 955kg, modestly-powered yet phenomenally agile machine.
Mazda’s iconic “World Car Design of the Year”-winning roadster has evolved over the years, yet always remained true to the Jinba Ittai philosophy of creating perfect harmony between driver and car. The MX-5, a timeless masterpiece – refined by Mazda’s craftsmen over four generations of customer feedback – celebrates its 35th birthday in 2024. With over 1.1 million units sold, the community of MX-5 enthusiasts continues to grow.With the 2024 MX-51 Mazda further reinforces the Jinba Ittai ethos by introducing DSC-Track, a new Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) mode optimised for circuit driving, and a newly developed Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential (Asymmetric LSD).DSC-Track prioritises driver safety by implementing over-steer control in hazardous spins that the driver is unable to correct. DSC-Track allows the driver to remain in control until the very last second, only then it will intervene. The Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential (Asymmetric LSD) stabilises vehicle turn-in behaviour. In particular, bolstering the slip-limiting force during deceleration improves stability when braking into a turn, where reduced rear wheel ground load leads to vehicle instability. Optimizing slip limiting force and preload specifically for the MX-5's engine, suspension, and tyre characteristics results in smoother and more linear turning performance. Turning stability has thus been enhanced to make manoeuvring easier in urban areas, as well as on winding roads.The 2024 Mazda MX-5 features advanced LED headlights that now seamlessly combine with the daytime running lights. Furthermore, the rear lights have undergone subtle revisions, and LEDs are now used also on the turn signals. The exterior changes are complete with a new paint option, ""Aero Grey Metallic"", which replaces “Platinum Quartz”, and 16- and 17-inch wheel designs.Enhancements for 2024 also extend to the interior, which gains a redesigned 8.8-inch centre display with Android Auto and Apple Car Play running wirelessly, a frameless rear-mirror and a suede-like seatmaterial called Leganu.
With 707 cars, the MX-5 Rally of Records, held on September 18th 2022, at the Modena Circuit, broke the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for largest parade of Mazda cars in the world. It beats the Dutch record set in 2013, which, with 683 cars, had held the record for almost a decade.The parade brought together all four generations of the iconic MX-5. It winded its way around the famous circuit under the watchful eye of the Guinness World Records adjudicator, who at 6pm made the record official to the delight of thousands of MX-5 fans from all over Italy and Europe. The unique rally gave the team at Mazda Italy the chance to rewrite an important chapter in the history of the world’s best-selling roadster.During the record-breaking event, the public had the chance to take part in many other Mazda activities, like the 'Fun to drive will never die' presentation, with the Japanese engineer Nobuhiro Yamamoto, programme manager of the third and fourth generation of the Mazda MX-5, Elisa Artioli, car enthusiast and granddaughter of Romano Artioli, the former patron of Lotus, and Andrea Levy, president MI.Mo Milano Monza Motor Show. The speakers presented different stories to explain what triggers their passion for the car and the driving pleasure, known in Mazda as "Jinba Ittai", which is the intuitive connection between a Mazda and its driver.
The updated 2020 Mazda MX-5 is now available to order with both the Convertible and RF Retractable Fastback available in dealerships. Featuring a 10-model line-up - four Convertibles and six RFs - the 132ps 1.5-litre Convertible is offered in SE-L and Sport trim, while the 184ps 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine is matched to Sport Tech and the new range-topping GT Sport Tech trim. As with the Convertible, SE-L and Sport trim RF’s are powered by the 1.5-litre engine, while Sport Tech and GT Sport Tech come with the more powerful 2.0-litre engine. In addition, 2.0-litre RFs in both trim levels come with the option to choose an automatic gearbox.New for the 2020 Mazda MX-5, the GT Sport Tech flagship model is marked out by 17-inch BBS alloy wheels and Burgundy Nappa leather seats, while across the whole range the MX-5 is available with Polymetal Grey Metallic paint for the first time. The updated version of Mazda’s sports car also benefits from extra standard safety equipment: from Sport models and above, the MX-5 features Front Smart City Brake Support, Lane Departure Warning System, Rear Smart City Brake Support, Traffic Sign Recognition and Driver Attention Alert. While Blind Spot Monitoring System with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Adaptive LED headlights and a reversing camera are standard on Sport Tech and GT Sport Tech models.
