For the past six years, the city of Beni in DR Congo's North Kivu region has been the scene of almost daily attacks which have killed hundreds of people and displaced hundreds of thousands. A year ago, the Congolese army launched a major offensive to drive out the main perpetrators of the massacres: the ADF, an armed militia originally from Uganda. But far from being defeated, the rebels have intensified their attacks, with deaths reaching a five-year high. Civilians find themselves caught in the middle, with the army and UN peacekeepers unable to protect them. Our correspondents report.
As holiday destinations go, the Democratic Republic of Congo isn't currently top of that many tourist wish lists. But increased security is leading adventure seekers to change their minds and reconsider the natural beauty the DRC has to offer. Our reporters head to Mount Nyiaragongo, an active volcano that is increasingly open for business, inside the country's iconic Virunga national park.
As Rwanda marks 20 years since the 1994 genocide, we report on the Hutus who fled to neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo after the Tutsis took power. About two million people crossed the border, including militiamen who took part in the slaughter, and they set up the FDLR - the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda - the self-proclaimed defenders of Hutu refugees. France 24's correspondents Léa-Lisa Westerhoff and Mehdi Meddeb have been to meet them.
We bring you a shocking insight into the horror of the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the east of the country, thousands of women, children and even men were raped last November. A crime committed not by the M23 rebels, but by the regular army, supposed to protect the population. Our reporter Fiona Lloyd-Davies went to Minova in South Kivu province, where the rapists are now coming face to face with their victims in court.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, rape has become a weapon of war. For over a dozen years, gynaecologist Denis Mukwege has operated on more than 30,000 raped and mutilated women. With his help, they have begun to put their ordeal behind them and rebuild their lives. The doctor, who is considered a hero, is continuing his fight despite an attempt on his life. Our reporters Marc Perelman and Johan Bodin met him.
