Reuters Reporters Get 7 Year Jail Sentence In Myanmar

According to Reuters, two of its journalists have been given extended jail sentences. Myanmar judge Ye Lwin found two reporters guilty of breaching a law on state secrets. Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo are said to have breached colonial-era Official Secrets Act. This after the two reporters collected and obtained confidential documents. They have now been sentenced to seven years in jail. The case is seen as a test of progress toward democracy in the Southeast Asian country. The defense can appeal the decision to a regional court and then the supreme court. The verdict comes as pressure mounts on Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's government. More than 700,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh since a government crackdown.
