US Unemployment Is Historically Low While Wage Growth Remains Sluggish

Description

According to Business Insider, Unemployment in the US is historically low, but wage growth is sluggish — and no one seems to know exactly why. Low productivity growth is the primary factor, but economists are puzzled as to how exactly the two are connected. Business Insiders CEO, Henry Blodget says, one of the reasons is because “company owners are choosing to maximize short-term profit by paying their employees as little as possible. It's time for a more balanced approach.” Experts say raising wages for lower-end jobs could accelerate growth.

Former Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen is now being confirmed for another top job--that of Treasury Secretary in the Biden administration. And according to Business Insider, she says raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour would have little to no impact on employment. Democrats support raising the minimum wage, but it remains a partisan issue due to its potential effects on the economy. However, Yellen said Tuesday that a $15 minimum wage increase wouldn't significantly impact the job market.

Business Insider reports that the prospect of more coronavirus aid is uncertain during a 'lame-duck session.' Such a session takes place in an even-numbered year, between the general election and the first session of the new Congress. The next deadline Congress faces is December 11. It must approve another spending bill to prevent a government shutdown. President Donald Trump supports another stimulus package. But his position has veered from cutting off relief negotiations to pressing for more money than Democrats.
