For The Last Time: NASA Desperately Tries To Communicate With Lost Mars Rover

Description

Curiosity isn’t NASA’s only rover currently on the red planet. According to Digital Trends, the Opportunity rover has also been on Marx since 2004. But last year, the rover dropped out of communications when it got stuck in an enormous dust storm, and it hasn’t been heard from since. Now NASA scientists are trying a last ditch attempt to contact the rover. They've outline three unlikely but possible scenarios to explain the rover's silence. One is that the rover’s primary X-band radio has failed; the second is that both the primary and secondary X-band radios have failed, and the third is that the rover’s internal clock has become offset. NASA will try sending the new commands for several weeks, but if Opportunity doesn’t respond this time, then it’s likely that the mission will have to be abandoned.
