Major European Countries Ready To Recognize Venezuela's Guaido As Interim President

Description

According to a report by Reuters, on Saturday, several major European countries offered their support for Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, saying that they would recognize him as interim president if Nicolas Maduro refused to announce new elections within the next 8 days. The UK, Germany, France and Spain all said that they would recognize Guaido unless a new election was announced. In May of last year, Maduro cruised to re-election amid low voter turnout and allegations of vote-buying by the government. The Venezuelan opposition, along with the United States and right leaning Latin American governments declined to recognize the result of the vote or the legitimacy of Maduro's presidency.
