Vice President Mike Pence and Pres. Donald Trump are spending the last days of their administration very differently. CNN reports that Mike Pence is dropping in on the White House phone operators. Pence is addressing troops at bases across the country. Pence is paying a visit to national guardsmen in place for the inauguration. Pence is speaking by phone with his successor, Kamala Harris. Trump, in denial and silenced on social media, is refusing to speak to Biden. Trump has also refused invitations to give a farewell address.
On Sunday, Sen. Mitt Romney publicly criticized President Donald Trump's continued efforts to undermine and delegitimize the 2020 election. Romney said there were many things Trump could be doing, like heralding the success of the COVID vaccine. Romney is dismayed that Trump has chosen to focus on overturning the election. "It's really sad and in a lot of respects embarrassing," he said. Romney said Trump is leaving Washington "with a whole series of conspiracy theories." "Things that are so nutty and loopy that people are shaking their heads, wondering what in the world has gotten into this man."
President Trump has asked the Supreme Court to block millions of votes from four battleground states. According to CNN, the four states predominantly voted for President-elect Joe Biden. Trump's request was made in a filing with the court. The lawsuit is being brought by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. In the suit, Paxton and President Trump are seeking to invalidate millions of votes. The four states that are at the center of the request are Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
President-elect Joe Biden continues to rack up the most votes won by any candidate in US history. As of Wednesday at 4 p.m., Biden earned more than 80 million votes in the 2020 presidential election. Business Insider reports that President Donald Trump has secured nearly 74 million votes so far. That's the second for most votes in any American presidential election.
Decision Desk HQ and Insider have announced that President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris have won Georgia. It's the first Democratic presidential victory in the state since Bill Clinton's narrow win in 1992, and earns Biden the state's 16 electoral votes. It brings Biden's final Electoral College count to 306, well above the 270 vote threshold for victory. Trump will earn 232 Electoral College votes. According to Business Insider, nearly all statewide precincts have reported. Biden led Trump by a 0.3% margin, earning 49.5% of the votes compared to Trump's 49.2%. Due to the closeness of the race, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on Wednesday ordered a statewide audit of the presidential election results. Such an audit requires that each ballot be counted by hand. Final vote tallies from each precinct must be submitted by November 18th.
The family of President Donald Trump appears to be split on whether he should publicly concede the presidential election to named winner Joe Biden. CNN reports Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner is urging concession, as is First Lady Melania Trump. However, Trump's two adult sons, Eric and Donald Jr. are loudly exhorting allies to continue pressing on. Moments after CNN and other networks projected Biden's win, Trump tweeted Biden was 'rushing to falsely pose as the winner' and that the race is 'far from over.' A Biden-Harris campaign staffer says there has been no communication between Biden and Trump, or between the campaigns, since the race was called.
