  • Car Bomb in Turkish City Kills Dozens

    Officials said a car bomb went off in the Turkish capital Wednesday near vehicles carrying military personnel, killing at least 28 people and wounding 61 others. The explosion occurred during evening rush hour in the city of Ankara, in an area close to parliament and armed forces headquarters and lodgings. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said that authorities would find those behind the bombing. Kurdish rebels, the Islamic State group and a leftist extremist group have carried out attacks in the country recently.

  • Four U.S. Troops Reported Dead In Syria Attack

    Reuters reports a bomb attack in northern Syria claimed by Islamic State killed U.S. troops on Wednesday. A U.S. official who declined to be named said four U.S. troops had been killed and three wounded in the blast. Others said two US troops had been killed. The U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS said Wednesday, “U.S. service members were killed during an explosion while conducting a routine patrol." The attack took place in the town of Manbij, which is controlled by rebels. A Pentagon spokeswoman said that only two U.S. troops had previously been killed in action in Syria. US President Donald Trump announced last month that he would withdraw all 2,000 U.S. troops from Syria after he announced that ISIS had largely been defeated there.

    According to Reuters, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Turkey with economic devastation if it attacks a U.S.-allied Kurdish militia in Syria. Relations between the United States and Turkey have long been strained by Washington’s support for the Kurdish YPG, which Turkey views as a terrorist organization. The Turkish presidency said that Trump and President Tayyip Erdogan discussed by phone on Monday the creation of a safe zone in northern Syria cleared of militia groups.
