Our Amazon: Brazilians who live in the world's biggest rainforest


Cattle breeders, indigenous teachers and loggers are among the more than 20 million people living in the Amazon in northern Brazil, carving out a living from the world's largest rainforest. Three residents of Para state talked to AFP about their lives and hopes for the region, where a surge in deforestation and fires this year has sparked a global outcry.

  • Amazon Reports Slump in Proft

    On Thursday, the world's biggest online retailer Amazon reported a 77 percent slump in quarterly profit, adding that net income fell to $197 million, or 40 cents per share when the second quarter ended June 30. Amazon, which is in the process of buying grocery Whole Foods, has stepped up spending to expand warehouses globally. It has also invested heavily in areas such as video content and in fast-growing economies around the world.

  • 'America's Got Talent' Does Not Lose Steam In Week 2 TV Ratings

    NBC swept up its second nightly win in a row on Tuesday with a new "America's Got Talent." The competition lost none of its premiere haul from a week ago. The two-hour episode averaged a 2.6 rating among adults ages 18 to 49 along with 12.2 million viewers. Those scores came a week after the show premiered with 100 percent retention from its 2016 summer opener. The newcomer "World of Dance" lost a little bit of its excellent premiere, shedding half of a ratings point in the key demographic.
