Mexico City seeks to curb its addiction to plastic

Mexico City's government is promoting indigenous and other traditionally-woven baskets and reusable bags in an effort to help residents curb their addiction to plastic, now that Mexico City has banned the use of plastic bags.

  • New Mexico City Seeks Sugary Drink Tax

    The Associated Press reports that voters in New Mexico's capital city have until Tuesday to decide whether to impose a new tax on sugary drinks. The new tax would raise the cost of a can of soda by nearly 25 cents. The citywide tax on distributors would provide Santa Fe an estimated $7.5 million in its first year to expand early childhood education to roughly 1,000 children. If approved, Santa Fe will join U.S. cities from Philadelphia to San Francisco that have adopted soda taxes in recent years. The proposal is being decided as working parents living just above poverty in Santa Fe struggle to pay the market rate for child care.

    Every year in September the government of Mexico City implements a voluntary disarmament program to promote weapons-free neighborhoods. The program is simple: swap your gun for a tablet, laptop, cash or other items. No questions asked. The program also allows kids to trade in “war toys” such as plastic pistols for other toys that promote learning. This year’s weapons’s exchange program has already collected 730 handguns, 203 long firearms, 121 grenades, and more than 6,000 cartridges. All the collected weapons are destroyed, even if they’re relics.
