UK ignores deadline to return Chagos Islands to Mauritius

In tonight's edition: we focus on the Chagos Islands, this as the United Kingdom ignores a deadline to hand back the archipelago to Mauritius. The Mauritian prime minister calls the UK an "illegal colonial occupier". Also, Guinea Bissau prepares to head the polls in Sunday's presidential elections. All 12 candidates have pledged to tackle the country's drug trafficking problem. And six decades after gaining independence from France, Niger decides to change its national anthem, following complaints that the lyrics praise its former colonial rulers.

    According to Reuters, the Hague is currently weighing Britain's claim to Chagos Islands. Mauritius has been appealing the case to judges at the World Court on Monday. It says Britain illegally stripped it of the Indian Ocean archipelago. The Islands are now home to a major U.S. air base. In 1965 Britain detached the Chagos Islands from its colony of Mauritius. Mauritius became independent three years later. The sparsely populated Chagos Islands, however, remained overseas British territory.
