France's quagmire? Sahel region trageted by increasing jihadist attacks


The youngest was 22, the oldest 43. France mourning its loss in Mali. The 13 killed in the collision of two military helicopters on patrol making for the biggest single day casualty toll since 1983 and serving as a reminder that nearly seven years after the French military intervened to rout the jihadists who had taken over the north.

    Thirteen out of the forty-one French soldiers who have died in Mali since 2013 were killed by improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. These hidden homemade bombs - simple to make, and highly effective - also pose a major risk to civilians.   • G5 Sahel leaders hold crisis summit in response to deadly jihadist attack in Niger

    Promising to increase coordination among themselves and for more support from other countries, the leaders of the G5 Sahel nations held a summit days after 71 soldiers were killed at their military base in Niger. The G5 is made up of Niger, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Chad and Mali. Thousands of soldiers and civilians have been killed in attacks by jihadists across that region in the last number of years.

  • NATO chief 'optimistic' that allies will support France in Sahel region

    France's NATO allies would "very seriously" consider any official request by President Emmanuel Macron to become more involved in the war against Islamist groups in the Sahel region of Africa, NATO's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told FRANCE 24 on Friday. Stoltenberg said he expects NATO allies to give a "positive response".
