Last year, data scientist Rebekah Jones was fired by the Florida Department of Health. Part of her job was to work on the state's COVID-19 dashboard. But the data scientist was fired in May after she said she refused to alter data related to the pandemic in the state. However, she continued to publish her own Florida COVID-19 data independently, through her own dashboard. In December, Florida law enforcement raided her home, brandishing weapons at her young children. They seized computers, phones, and external storage drives in connection with an alleged hack. Now, Business Insider reports an arrest warrant has been issued for Jones, although it's not clear with what crime Florida officials plan to charge. Jones has agreed to turn herself in, calling the charges 'bogus' and an attempt to silence her for being a scientist critical of the government.
President-elect Joe Biden on Monday said that his transition team is facing ongoing roadblocks. The roadblocks come from President Trump's political leadership at the Pentagon. Several of the blocks also come from the Office of Management and Budget, says Business Insider. "Right now, we just aren't getting all the information we need from the outgoing administration in key national security areas." Biden over the past week has repeatedly expressed concern about the lack of access he's received. The shutout follows alongside the SolarWinds hack and amid tensions with Iran.
When COVID-19 reached the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Protection tracked data related to its spread. However, President Donald Trump's coronavirus task force wrested control from the CDC, with the launch of HHS Protect. The main pandemic data tracking system is run by the Department of Health and Human Services. Federal and state officials use HHS Protect’s data to assess the burden of disease across the country and allocate scarce resources, from medicines to PPE. The problem is, HHS Protect’s data often diverge dramatically from those collected by other sources, including hospitals, states, and federal agencies. And according to Science Magazine, the data also varies from the apparent reality on the ground. A CDC internal analysis completed this month shows HHS Protect's data problems are a national problem. The HHS Protect data are poor quality, inconsistent with state reports, and the analysis is slipshod. And the pressure on hospitals is through the roof. Confidential Source, CDC
