Federal Judge Blocks Trump's Latest Asylum Rule

A federal judge in San Francisco blocked President Donald Trump’s latest attempt for an asylum rule. According to Reuters, the new rule would bar almost all asylum applications at the U.S.-Mexico border. If implemented, the rule would require asylum-seekers to find safe haven in a third country they traveled through. An attorney challenging the ban said the ruling was “an important victory for incredibly vulnerable individuals and families.

  • Federal Judge Demands USPS's DeJoy Appear And Explain Himself

    A federal judge is demanding that US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy appears in court to explain himself. Business Insider reports Judge Emmet Sullivan made the remark in hearing a case brought by the NAACP and other civil rights groups. The plaintiffs have been trying to get the US postal service to deliver mail-in ballots in a timely manner. The purpose of Wednesday's hearing was to grill the USPS on its noncompliance with Judge Sullivan's previous orders. Sullivan ordered the USPS on Tuesday to reexamine mailing locations in 15 states and ensure that any found ballots would be delivered before polls closed. The Postal Service said it wouldn't comply with the order and would keep its own schedule, which would finish its sweep by 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Expressing his fury at the USPS's performance throughout the pandemic, Sullivan accused the USPS of slow-walking responses to his orders.     In PA, MN, and TX, federal judges have ordered election officials to "segregate" certain ballots. The vote-by-mail ballots that arrive late are being set aside in case another court invalidates them. Around 127,000 votes that were cast at drive-thru locations in TX during the early voting period. Those ballots have been specially marked for the same reason, says Business Insider. All of these court orders came after extensive litigation and it's not clear how many votes are at risk.

    A federal judge has nixed a Trump administration proposal that would have kicked off nearly 700,000 American adults from the USDA's food stamps program. The proposed change to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, or SNAP, would have made it more difficult for Americans to qualify for the program. The DC US District Court said the proposal leaves 'states scrambling and exponentially increasing food insecurity for tens of thousands of Americans.' The ruling noted the USDA has been 'icily silent' about how many American adults would have been denied SNAP benefits during the pandemic. According to Business Insider, as of May 2020, SNAP rosters added over 6 million new enrollees.

    Business Insider reports there are still 11 million fewer Americans employed compared to before the pandemic hit in February. The pace of job growth is slowing, and Tuesday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell reiterated his call for more economic aid from the US government to American workers. Economists warn another stimulus package is necessary to ward off the threat of a double-dip recession. Without it, Powell said on Tuesday, the economic recovery will be painfully slow. Nevertheless, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday ordered an end to all Congressional stimulus talks. That is, until after he is reelected in November.
