U.S. To Pay $16 Billion To Bail Out Farmers As Trade War Drags On

Description

The U.S. government will pay American farmers hurt by the trade war with China. Farmers are to receive between $15 and $150 per acre in an aid package totaling $16 billion. Officials said Thursday that disbursements will be made according to geographic area, rather than crop. Reuters reports farmers in the South are likely to see higher rates than in the Midwest. Assistance begins in mid-to-late August U.S. farmers are a key Trump constituency, and have been among the hardest hit in the year-long trade war. Shipments of soybeans, the most valuable U.S. farm export, to top buyer China sank to a 16-year low in 2018. Democrats criticized the move, saying farmers needed fair trade instead of a bailout.
