The House panel that investigated last year's attack on the US Capitol recommends that criminal charges be filed against former president Donald Trump. The committee unanimously recommended that the Justice Department charge Trump with inciting an insurrection, obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiring to defraud the US government and making false statements. Former president Donald Trump's refusal to immediately intervene to stop last year's assault on the US Capitol makes him "unfit for any office," the vice chair of the House panel investigating the attack says. "No man who would behave that way at that moment in time can ever serve in any position of authority in our nation again," Representative Liz Cheney tells the final meeting of the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. "He is unfit for any office," she adds. SOUNDBITE
The Trump Organization's finances are to be under even closer scrutiny by the Manhattan District Attorney's office. CNN reports the investigation will include the family's 212-acre 'Seven Springs' compound in Westchester County. It's a significant widening of an investigation that began more than a year ago, and also draws closer to President Donald Trump's son Eric Trump. He's the Trump Organization's executive vice president and was directly involved in discussions about the property now under investigation. The criminal investigation poses a significant threat to Trump, his business, and his family as he leaves the White House next week.

Business Insider reports Stephanie Winston Wolkoff is being sued by the Department of Justice. The suit follows Wolkoff's publication of a tell-all about the 'rise and fall' of her 15-year friendship with first lady Melania Trump on September 1. The DOJ claims that the publication of the book was in violation of a nondisclosure agreement she signed. Wolkoff is a former special events planner for Vogue and helped plan President Donald Trump's inauguration in 2017. She was fired from the White House in 2018 after a scandal involving spending on the inauguration. Wolkoff claims that after the 2016 RNC convention, First Lady Melania Trump felt someone was trying to sabotage her. Trump became suspicious when it was revealed parts of a speech she made had been plagiarized from a 2008 speech by Michelle Obama.
If Joe Biden is elected president, outgoing President Donald Trump is likely to have more days in court than he ever dreamed possible. Lacking his current presidential protections, Trump will face multiple investigations over whether he committed fraud in his businesses--and as an individual. According to CNN, Trump also faces defamation lawsuits sparked by his denials of accusations made by women who have alleged he assaulted them. If Trump wins, he may be able to run out the statute of limitations, which for some crimes in New York state law is five to six years. Or, he could simply continue enjoying the DOJ's Office of Legal Counsel opinion that says a sitting president can't be indicted.
