  • FDA Announces Link To Cancer & Breast Implants

This week the FDA revealed 359 cases of a rare cancer that is reported linked to the use of breast implants. The cancer known as anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), is said to breach the cells around the implant. Since February there have been 9 deaths reported said to be directly tied to the disease and use of implants. There are often many risk involved in surgical procedures, this however only recently came to for front of the publics attention. Researchers say ALCL is not a form of breast cancer, is found in the skin or lymph nodes. Doctors say the disease has typically presented in women who've experienced problems with their implants, such as lumps or asymetry.

  • Rare Form Of Cancer Linked To Breast Implants

In a new report issued by the FDA a rare form of cancer known as "Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma", or ALCL, has been linked to the use of certain types of Breast implants. The report is a serious matter and according to UPI .com since February 1, of this year the FDA has received 359 medical device reports, or MDRs, of BIA-ALCL that resulted in deaths, 9 in total. • Link Found Between Gene Mutations and Better Outcomes for Breast Cancer Treatment

Breast cancer patients with groups of mutations clustered in their genome have better outcomes than patients without them. Researchers at the University of California San Diego found in a recent study that more than half of breast cancer patients have clusters of genetic mutations called kataegis, and their cancer tends to be less invasive. This offers better opportunities for effective treatment. Dr. Kelly Frazer is a professor of pediatrics and director of the Institute for Genomic Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She told UPI, "We don't know what causes kataegis, and before this study not much was known about its functional importance at the molecular or clinical level." She added, "We've now found that kataegis is associated with a good prognosis for patients with breast cancer."

  • Some Women More Susceptible to Rare Early Breast Cancer

A new study found that younger women and black women have a greater chance of being diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS, however increased diagnosis and treatment of women with cancerous cells has not resulted in statistically significant lower levels of death. With the discovery that treatment of very early stage cancers has not reduced mortality from the disease significantly, some researchers are questioning the effects of what they describe as over-diagnosis and over-treatment. Researchers wrote in the study, published in JAMA Oncology, "The reason for the decline may be better distinction between DCIS and invasive cancer, but overdiagnosis is likely, given that the incidence of DCIS has increased dramatically over the same period."
