The 2019 World Superbike Championship ends with races on October 25 and 26 at Losail International Circuit in Qatar. Just like the MotoGP​, the Superbikes compete in the evening under the circuit's spotlights. Located about 23 km (14 miles) north of Doha, the track cost 60 million US dollars to build and was inaugurated in October 2004 by the MotoGP.The Superbikes debuted a year later, but didn't run from 2010 to 2013. Contrary to the other seasonal events, Race 1 is held on Friday and Race 2 on Saturday. ​Even though it is positioned in one of the hottest areas on the planet, the track doesn't present any particular temperature problems because the races start at 8 pm, 3 hours and 10 minutes after the sun sets. During the two races in 2016, the tarmac reached 28°C (82° F) and in 2015 it got up to 34°C (93°F).​According to Brembo technicians, who work closely with 15 World Superbike riders, Losail International Circuit is avarage demanding circuit for the brakes. On a scale of 1 to 5, it earned a 3 on the difficulty index, exactly the same score given to three other tracks.​ The 16 corners on the track correspond to a full 13 braking sections, a record for the World Superbike. Overall, during one lap the brakes are used for almost 38 seconds, which comes to 32% of the total duration of the race. ​The MotoGP instead​ turn to their Brembo brakes 11 times per lap.The average deceleration on the numerous corners changes constantly and covers a broad range that goes from 0.6 G to 1.3 G. This is one of the reasons why the average peak deceleration per lap is 0.99 G.​Summing up all of the force applied by a rider on the brake lever from the starting line to the checkered flag, the result comes in at just over 900 kg, which is about 50 kg less than the force applied by the MotoGP riders.​This is due to the difference in the duration of the races.

  • The comments on the 2019 Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix according to Brembo

    ​​​​The 21st and last race of the Formula 1 World Championship is scheduled for November 29th to December 1st at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The track is on the man-made island of the same name, next to Ferrari World, in the area north-west of the capital of the United Arab Emirates.​ Even though there are 21 corners, the drivers only use their brakes 11 times each lap.Only the city track in Singapore ​has more braking points: 15.The brakes are used for a total of almost 18.5 seconds each lap, which equals 17 minutes over the course of the whole race, 19% of the GP. ​The average peak deceleration per lap is 3.7 G, but taking into account just the first 11 corners, the average exceeds 4.6 G, a figure never approached in the remaining turns.​The energy dissipated during braking in the whole GP from each single-seater is 242 kWh, which is quite similar to the Hungarian GP. ​From the starting line to the checkered flag, each driver exerts a total load of 53.5 ​tons on the brake pedal.On the single lap though, the load exceeds 970 kg.​

    Built in 1940, the circuit has been modified throughout the course of the years, most recently in 1990.The cars drive counterclockwise and the straights are fairly short: As a consequence, there is only one occasion when braking is used to drop the speed by more than 200 km/h (124 mph). ​The track is very drivable with frequent changes in direction, but it also has high-speed turns that don't require use of the brakes. Every lap, the brakes are used barely seven times, but it is not the negative record for the ​World Championship: in Hockenheim are used five times, in Monza and Montreal six.Overall, during one lap at Interlagos, the brakes are used for almost 12 seconds which comes to 19% of the duration of the race.​The presence of few hard braking points results in ​the average peak deceleration per lap of 3.6 G.Even the energy dissipated in braking by each single-seater during the entire GP is contained: 206 kWh.​From the starting line to the checkered flag, each driver exerts a total load of 40 tons and a half on the brake pedal, which is almost identical to the Russian GP.​

    Formula 1 is back in the United States for the 19th race of the 2019 World Championship from November 1 to 3 at Circuit of the Americas. Located in the hills overlooking the center of Austin, Texas, this track was designed by Hermann Tilke according to recommendations by Kevin Schwantz.​ The Formula 1 drivers use their brakes on only 9 of the 20 corners, which is three less than the MotoGP riders. ​ The grip guaranteed by the four tires means the cars don't need to brake on turns 3, 6 and 16. ​​To complete one lap on the Austin track, the brakes on each Formula 1 car are applied for 17 seconds​, compared to the 37 seconds the MotoGP bikes need. On average during the United States GP, the Formula 1 cars apply their brakes for 16 minutes, which is 19% of the overall duration of the race.The average peak deceleration per lap is 3.8 G, but there are four corners where this gets up to at least 4.7 G. The energy dissipated in braking throughout the GP by one single-seater however, is high: 220 kWh, which is the same of the Bahrain GP. Instead the load applied to the brake pedal by each driver from the starting line to the checkered flag is not among the heaviest in the World Championship: 51.3 tons, which is a quarter less that of the Singapore GP. In other words, each driver is required to apply a force of about 0.546 tons (1,204 lbs) for every minute of driving. ​

    The third of Asian-Oceanic races poker, the Australian GP, is scheduled for October 25-27 at Phillip Island and will be the 17th MotoGP World Championship race of the season. Inaugurated in December 1956, the track has hosted the 500 cc MotoGP since 1989 and World Superbike since 1990. ​Located on Phillip Island 140 km (87 miles) from Melbourne, of all the circuits in the championship, this one is the closest to the South Pole. The last four editions saw the position on the 38th parallel south translate into rigid temperatures: During the race in 2016 and 2019, the air temperature never went over 13° C (55° F) and in 2018 it maxed out at 16° C (61° F). ​To maintain the correct operating temperature of the brakes, the MotoGP bikes often use carbon covers, the same they use on other circuits too when it rains. The riders could switch to steel discs when it rains but in 2017 in Motegi, the first 9 riders proved that it is also possible to race in the rain with Brembo carbon discs getting also great benefit from it.​​According to Brembo technicians, who assist 100% of the 2019 MotoGP pilots, Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is only slightly demanding on the brakes. On a scale of 1 to 5, it earned a 1 on the difficulty index, a score that only Assen of the other 18 tracks earned. The same score was given for the Superbike race. ​Even though there are 12 corners, the Australian track only has seven points where the MotoGP bikes use their brakes, which is the same number than the Superbikes. No other MotoGP World Champion track requires less braking: Buriram and Spielberg have seven braking sections too. ​On average, the brakes are used for 22 seconds per lap at Phillip Island, which comes to 25% of the overall duration of the race. And the nearby icy waters of the Pacific Ocean ease the dispersion of the accumulated heat. The average deceleration is 1.07 G, but for four of the seven braking sections, it doesn't exceed 1 G. ​Adding up all of the force a rider applies on the brake lever from the starting line to the checkered flag, the result comes in at just under 5.9 tons, the lowest in the entire championship. For the Superbikes however, the value is closer to 4.9 tons because their races are only 22 laps long, as opposed to the 27 laps of the MotoGP races. ​
