Millions of people in India's capital start the week choking through "eye-burning" smog, with schools closed, cars taken off the road and construction halted. IMAGES
A thick veil of smog has fallen on New Delhi, leading to a health emergency and warnings from authorities for citizens to stay indoors in order to avoid the dangerous haze. Indian farmers usually burn their crop stubble around the beginning of November, which is believed to be the leading cause of the thick smog. The Indian Medical Association has declared a health emergency and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that the city has become a "gas chamber"

Several hundred environmental activists enter a chemical plant in Pierre-Benite, Lyon, to protest against pollution. The action was organised by Extinction Rebelloion and Youth for Climate and saw protesters cutting through boundary fences, smash security equipment and unfurl a large banner from the site's roof reading "poison".
