  • Google to Introduce Ad Blocker for Chrome Search Engine

On Thursday, Google announced that it will begin featuring an ad blocker in its Chrome browser starting in 2018. The move is in response to the search giant's recent joining of the group 'Coalition for Better Ads'. In a statement, Google added, "The vast majority of online content creators fund their work with advertising. Annoying, intrusive ads have led users to block advertisements altogether via extensions and other tools." According to the Wall Street Journal, Google is giving publishers around six months to prepare themselves for the roll out of the ad blocker tool.

  • Edge getting built-in ad blocker

So far, Microsoft has done an excellent job launching its Internet Explorer replacement browser, Edge. But users still aren't using the browser quite as much as the tech giant would like, so they're doing what they can to improve the browser in the Anniversary Update for Windows 10. During Build 2016 this past week, Microsoft listed updates that were slated for June update, including a built-in ad blocker for Edge. This might seem a bit contradictory, since Microsoft itself actually benefits from online advertising. But Microsoft built in similar technology for Internet Explorer, allowing users to disable third-party tracking while they were browsing the internet. Users will have to wait for the June update to see how well the built-in ad blocker works.

  • Snowden Says Protect Your Privacy by Flipping On An Ad Blocker

Edward Snowden says Everybody should be running adblock software. The government surveillance whistleblower gave an advice in an interview with The Intercept, on how average citizens can shield their privacy online. One of the less obvious security tips: flip on an ad blocker. Snowden said that we have not just a right but a duty to take every effort to protect yourself. Infecting popular websites like the So-called "malvertising" attacks — in which ad networks play unwitting host to harmful files disguised as ads — have been on the rise over the past several months. The trend is worrying for publishers who rely on advertising for their livelihood, and some argue that it's unethical for readers to skip out on an "implied contract" that supplies them with free content in exchange for putting up with ads. As Snowden says, most ad blockers also come with options to close these loopholes, and on the whole, they can serve to tighten online security as Snowden says.

  • Google Starts Punishing AdBlock Users With Unskippable YouTube Video Ads

Advert blocking extensions are becoming increasingly popular on the Internet, and websites that rely on adverts to fund their existence react in different ways. Some have added a tip jar, started a Patreon account, or simply show a message asking visitors to disable the ad blocker. Google, it seems, is taking more drastic action on YouTube and bypassing AdBlock completely. It’s also punishing users for having it enabled. Multiple reports have appeared on Twitter that even with AdBlock enabled, YouTube is now able to show video adverts. The tweak made by Google to allow the video adverts to work regardless is thought to effect all advert blocking extensions, not just AdBlock specifically. However, it is limited. It only works in Chrome for now, and only some users are experiencing the change.
