Electric cars are quiet, clean and dynamic - but do they offer the same level of safety as a classic four-wheel drive vehicle on a slippery road surface? The Volvo XC40 is perfect for answering this question. With the premium compact SUV, the customer can choose between a wide variety of engines and drive concepts: combustion, mild and plug-in hybrids as well as a fully electric version, front-wheel drive, mechanical all-wheel drive and, with the Pure Electric model, all-wheel drive by means of electric motors on the front and rear axles. The Volvo XC40 is the latest addition to the model range and has risen from scratch to number two in the brand's internal sales ranking. The series underlines its pioneering role in the field of electrification: The Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 AWD is the brand's first fully electric model.
The XC40 Recharge is the first of several fully electric Volvos to come and today’s production start represents a significant step towards Volvo Cars’ ambition to reduce its CO2 footprint per car by 40 per cent by 2025. That same year, it expects 50 per cent of its global sales to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids. Customer demand for the XC40 Recharge has been strong and while order books remain open, every car scheduled to be built this calendar year has already been sold. The first cars are scheduled to be delivered to customers in Europe later this month. The start of customer car production follows a period of preparation in which the Ghent plant has built a limited number of pre-production cars. This process, standard procedure for every new model, aims to optimise the production flow and ensure top-notch quality of every car built. All relevant production staff has also received extensive training on safely building electric cars.

Volvo Cars introduced the Volvo XC40 Recharge, the company's first ever fully electric car and the first model to appear in its brand-new Recharge car line concept.The Volvo XC40 Recharge, based on the multi-award-winning and best-selling XC40 small SUV, is the first of a family of fully electric Volvos. It represents a true milestone for Volvo Cars: the company's first electric car and the first Volvo with a brand-new infotainment system powered by Google's Android operating system.Over the next five years, Volvo Cars will launch a fully electric car every year, as it seeks to make all-electric cars 50 per cent of global sales by 2025, with the rest hybrids. Recharge will be the overarching name for all chargeable Volvos with a fully electric and plug-in hybrid powertrain.From early 2020, customers entering the Volvo Cars website will first be asked whether they want a Volvo Recharge car or not. To further encourage electric driving, every Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid model will come with free electricity for a year, provided through a refund for the average electricity cost during that period.
