Production of the Volkswagen ID.3 starts in Zwickau

Description

The Zwickau plant is a key element in the most comprehensive electric offensive in the automotive industry. Volkswagen is the very first volume automaker to entirely convert a large vehicle plant from 100 percent internal combustion engines to 100 percent e-mobility. All in all, Volkswagen is investing about €1.2 billion in the conversion of this location. In the final expansion stage from 2021, up to 330,000 electric vehicles per year will roll off the production lines here, some 30,000 vehicles more than previously. Zwickau will therefore be Europe’s largest and most efficient electric car plant. The ID.3 “made in Zwickau” will also make a significant contribution to climate protection. It will not only operate with zero local emissions but will also be produced with a neutral carbon balance. This will make the ID. 3 a trailblazer on the road to clean, sustainable mobility.

  • Resumption of production of electric cars at Volkswagen Plant in Zwickau

The Volkswagen plant in Zwickau is gradually restarting production of electric cars. Production of the all-electric ID.3 resumes on Thursday, initially with reduced capacity and significantly slower cycle times. Numerous additional measures to protect the health of the workforce are being implemented, and the restart is also oriented to the gradual stabilization of international supply chains. “We all have a historic task to accomplish. That task is to protect the health of our employees - and at the same time get business back on track responsibly”, said Thomas Ulbrich, Volkswagen Brand Board Member for E-Mobility and Speaker of the Management Board of Volkswagen Sachsen.

  • Official start of production Volkswagen ID.5 and ID. 5 GTX in Zwickau

Volkswagen is driving forward the shift to electric vehicle manufacturing with its ACCELERATE strategy. Today’s official start of production of the ID.5 and ID.5 GTX marks the completion of Volkswagen’s successful transformation of its Zwickau plant into a dedicated electric vehicle production facility. The long-established site in western Saxony is the first large-scale facility of any volume manufacturer worldwide to switch over all production from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles. Six models from the Volkswagen, Audi and CUPRA brands will now be manufactured in Zwickau based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). The plants in Emden (ID.4), Hanover (ID. Buzz) and Chattanooga (USA, ID.4) will be added to the electric vehicle production network this year. The Volkswagen brand has thus laid the foundations for building 1.2 million all-electric-vehicles at its sites in Europe, the USA and China in 2022 based on the MEB.

The ID.4’s exterior has athletic proportions for an ultra-modern appearance. Its clear, flowing design is inspired by nature and guarantees very good aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of 0.28.Its basic version already features headlights that are almost completely equipped with light-emitting diodes while its tail light clusters have been fully equipped with this technology. As the top-of-the-range version, interactive IQ.Light LED matrix headlights are even more progressive: they welcome drivers with swivelling lens modules and generate an intelligently controlled main beam. These headlights have been paired with the new 3D LED tail light clusters. Their tail light is particularly homogeneous and lights up in an intensive red. The large wheels with a diameter of up to 21 inches underline the vehicle’s character.
