Top US military commander signals plans to reduce American military presence in Africa


The top military commander in the US has signaled a scaling down of the country's military presence in Africa. "It would be bad news for us if the Americans decided to pull out," responded Emmanuel Macron at the G5 Sahel summit.

    According to Business Insider, Gen. Scott Miller, the top US and NATO commander in Afghanistan, on Thursday narrowly escaped a bold, deadly insider attack the Taliban claimed responsibility for. Miller at one point drew his sidearm during the attack, but did not fire, according to CNN. The attack took place in Kandahar, and led to the death of Gen. Abdul Raziq, a powerful Afghan police chief. Several other Afghan police and officials were killed or wounded, and three Americans were wounded in the incident as well. The assailant was reportedly killed in the firefight.

    According to a report by Business Insider, on Tuesday, the US military said it had killed approximately 60 al-Shabaab 'terrorists' in an airstrike in Somalia, the deadliest strike against the militants in the past year. The airstrike on October 12th reportedly targeted militants in the area of Harardere, Somalia US Africa Command said in a statement, and was conducted in support of local troops. The statement reportedly said, "This precision airstrike was the largest airstrike against al-Shabaab since November 21, 2017, when US forces conducted an airstrike against an al-Shabaab camp killing approximately 100 terrorists."
