The European Union says it has allocated 20 million euros ($21.8 million) worth of humanitarian aid to Haiti after gang violence plunged the Caribbean country into renewed chaos. "An unprecedented level of gang violence is dramatically increasing humanitarian needs across the country. The funding will help humanitarian partners to address the most urgent needs of the population," says European Commission spokesman Balazs Ujvari. SOUNDBITE
The European Commission announces it is clearing a 50-million-euro payment to the Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, which was under review following Israeli claims its staff participated in Hamas's October 7 attack. Commission spokesman Eric Mamer tells reporters the funds would be "implemented through international partners, such as, for example, the Red Cross and the Red Crescent." SOUNDBITE
The EU demands an "urgent" audit of the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA and says it is reviewing funding, following Israeli allegations that some staff participated in Hamas's October 7 attack. The audit should be led by European Commission-appointed experts and be conducted alongside a UN investigation into the claims, commission spokesman Eric Mamer tells journalists. SOUNDBITE
