This week, we're putting the Focus on France's expat community. For French citizens living abroad, the pandemic has played out in a very different way than for their compatriots back home: from political responses to financial and professional consequences, not forgetting travel bans, each adoptive nation has had its own way of handling the crisis. Many expatriates have been left feeling that in times of trouble, there really is "no place like home". To find out more, we meet French diplomat Laurence Haguenauer, in charge of French citizens abroad.
The Covid-19 pandemic and its restrictions is taking a heavy toll on the mental health of students across the world. As France’s university students are joining their teachers today to protest their conditions, a recent government report says 50% of France’s young people are worried about their mental health, with 23% admitting they have thought about putting an end to their lives. For people who love eating out at restaurants, having to dine on takeout at home can feel uninspiring. But according to Business Insider, chefs and restauranteurs say there a number of ways to make eating at home feel more special. First, turn off the news and the fluorescent kitchen lights. Swap them for mood music and candlelight. Dress your table in the theme of the cuisine you're eating. Use cloth napkins with napkin rings or fancy folds, and your good china, cutlery, and stemware. Third, pair your meal with an appropriate beverage: sweet tea with fried chicken, sake with sushi, or horchata with Mexican food. Finally, jazz up your entree's plating with a garnish, and your dessert with whipped cream, fresh fruit, or a chocolate or raspberry drizzle. Bon appetit!
