Colombo, Dec 14 (EFE/EPA).- A container with 25 metric tonnes (25,000 kilograms) of dried turmeric yams (Curcuma longa) was seized Monday by the Sri Lankan Customs after being declared as large onions and unloaded at the Colombo port. The container has been transshipped from Dubai and so far 62 such cases have been detected by Sri Lanka Customs, according to its officials. Currently, the import of turmeric, a popular ingredient in local cuisine and also used as a disinfectant by most Sri Lankans, is banned mainly for two reasons according to the government. One is, as it was mainly imported from India and was a potential Coronavirus transmitter and the other was since it could be grown locally. Imports are cheaper than cultivating locally.
