China's economy grows 2.3% in 2020 as rebound from Covid-19 pandemic continues

Description

China's GDP grew 2.3% in 2020, making it the only major world economy to avoid a contraction. The growth was pushed by its manufacturing sector, although retail spending and consumer appetite remained low. Meanwhile in South Korea, the heir to smartphone maker Samsung is convicted on bribery charges and sentenced to two and a half years in prison, which pushed Samsung-related stocks down in trading.

  • Opinion: Donald Trump Lost, And It Wasn't Because Of Voter Fraud

President Donald Trump is the first president in polling history never to have received a positive job approval rating while in office. In exit polls Tuesday, CNN reports Americans gave Trump an approval rating of 47%. Senior CNN commentator David Axelrod notes that as Trump blames the media and voter fraud for his loss to Joe Biden, Trump should look in the mirror, instead. Axelrod argues that Trump had planned to be re-elected on the strength of the economy, which caused him to downplay the seriousness of COVID-19. As the pandemic picked up speed, Trump used it to inflame his base even more, and divide the country even further. By denying science, however, he torpedoed the US economy, not to mention contributing to hundreds of thousands of deaths.

  • You're So Lame: Stimulus Bill In Lame-Duck Session Uncertain As Americans Teeter

White House negotiations with Democrats over another pandemic aid bill have come to naught so far. Congress left town on Tuesday without passing another one, as virus cases surge across the nation, and the economic recovery threatens to grind to a halt. Business Insider reports that the prospect of more coronavirus aid is uncertain during a 'lame-duck session.' Such a session takes place in an even-numbered year, between the general election and the first session of the new Congress. The next deadline Congress faces is December 11. It must approve another spending bill to prevent a government shutdown. President Donald Trump supports another stimulus package. But his position has veered from cutting off relief negotiations to pressing for more money than Democrats.

  • Covid-19 trade drop limited to 9.2% in 2020, WTO says

Geneva, Oct 6 (EFE), (Camera: Antonio Broto).- Global trade is showing signs of recovery amid the deep economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and is expected to end the year with a fall of 9.2 percent instead of 12.9 percent estimated six months ago, according to the World Trade Organization.Trade volume is expected to grow by 7.2 percent in 2021, meaning that by the end of next year it will still not have returned to where it was before the outbreak, according to a WTO report released Tuesday. The organization predicted the global GDP will fall by 4.8 percent this year and increase next year by 4.9 percent. If the spread of the virus is controlled and the drop is limited to 9.2 percent as predicted, it will mean ending 2020 in the most positive scenario that was contemplated in April. The recovery expected in 2021 is only a third of the 21.3 percent calculated in April meaning the prevailing scenario for the near future is one of “weak recovery”.WTO deputy director-general Xiaozhun Yi warned that a resurgence in the virus that requires new restrictions could reduce global GDP growth by two to three percentage points and put a four percent dent in the growth in merchandise trade expected in 2021.International trade could be largely sustained thanks to demand for medical supplies, electronic devices and technological goods.FOOTAGE OF THE PRESS CONFERENCE ON TUESDAY.SOUNDBITES OF XIAOCHUN YI, WTO DIRECTOR-GENERAL; AND ROBERT KOOPMAN, WTO CHIEF ECONOMIST.
