The top Republican in the House of Representatives says that Donald Trump "bears responsibility" for inciting a riot at the US Capitol, in a floor speech an hour before a bipartisan majority is expected to impeach the president for an unprecedented second time. SOUNDBITE
The House of Representatives impeached President Donald Trump on Wednesday. Having been previously impeached for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress related to the Ukraine scandal, he's the first president to be impeached twice. Trump was impeached for 'incitement of insurrection' over his role in triggering the violent siege of the US Capitol on January 6. Five people died in the riot. According to Business Insider, ten Republican lawmakers broke ranks to vote with their Democratic colleagues to impeach the president. The final vote was 232 in favor of impeachment and 197 against.
Democrat Rep. Brendan Boyle of Philadelphia let loose on Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas following the deadly riots on Capitol Hill. Boyle issued a profanity-filled tweet at Cruz after Cruz accused Democrats of attempting to make political hay out of the melee. At least three top Republicans plan to miss President Donald Trump's farewell ceremony. House Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Rep. Kevin McCarthy will attend church with Joe Biden. Vice President Mike Pence is unable to make it due to logistical issues, says Business Insider. Many people see this as the final snub to Trump from his once-closest allies. Others may also fail to attend but none so far have been confirmed outside of these three. Joe Biden is set to take office tomorrow and become the 46th President of the United States.
