At least four Republicans said on Tuesday they would join Democrats in voting to impeach President Donald Trump over the attack on the US Capitol, as Vice President Mike Pence rejected calls to use a constitutional maneuver to oust him.
The House of Representatives impeached President Donald Trump on Wednesday. Having been previously impeached for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress related to the Ukraine scandal, he's the first president to be impeached twice. Trump was impeached for 'incitement of insurrection' over his role in triggering the violent siege of the US Capitol on January 6. Five people died in the riot. According to Business Insider, ten Republican lawmakers broke ranks to vote with their Democratic colleagues to impeach the president. The final vote was 232 in favor of impeachment and 197 against.
On Wednesday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said President Donald Trump was complicit in the Capitol siege. McCarthy also rejected conspiracy theories about antifa involvement. Business Insider reports that McCarthy further emphasized that President-elect Joe Biden was legitimately elected. The House GOP leader said he opposes impeachment but supports the resolution to censure Trump. "The president bears responsibility for Wednesday's attack by mob rioters."
