UPI reports new research shows it's a very good idea to insist that healthcare workers get an annual flu shot. That's according to researchers from the University of Georgia, Montana State University and Monash University in Australia. They found that states with mandatory flu shots for hospital workers saw statewide reductions in deaths from influenza and pneumonia. They estimate that during the 2016-17 season alone, nearly 2,000 deaths were averted in the 15 U.S. states that had mandatory vaccination laws at that time. The findings suggest that health-worker vaccination laws may be a good way to protect the country's most vulnerable populations. The researchers say it's possible that similar benefits could also be seen with mandatory COVID-19 vaccination of hospital workers.
The world is rejoicing that the first vaccinations against COVID-19 have been jabbed into the arms of grateful Britons. However, health experts say getting vaccinated is by no means a free pass to live in the "Before Times," maskless and hanging out in crowds. According to Business Insider, infectious-disease pharmacist Debra Goff warns that we still don't know how long the vaccine's protection will last. Likewise, we also don't know whether it prevents recipients from continuing to spread the virus to other people. What's more, the vaccine also won't protect recipients right away, and, for a small percentage of the population, won't protect them at all. Still, vaccinated people can start making plans for 2021 and look forward to resuming aspects of the old normal as more and more people get vaccinated.
A new study reveals a COVID-19 vaccine under development in England safely promotes an immune response against the virus. According to UPI, the vaccine is in Phase 2 of clinical trials with Astra Zeneca, and is particularly effective in elderly recipients who are over age 70. Researchers say the finding of the 'robust' responses in older people in their study is both significant and encouraging. The populations at greatest risk of serious COVID-19 disease include people with existing health conditions and older adults. The so-called "Oxford vaccine," formally known as ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, is one of more than 120 being evaluated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, 48 of these vaccines have gotten into clinical trials to assess their safety and efficacy.
UPI reports people sickened with COVID-19 produce "high-quality" antibodies. The antibodies work against the virus five to seven months after they become infected. The findings suggest those infected with COVID-19 potentially can develop a long-lasting immunity to it. Antibodies are proteins produced by the human immune system to help the body fight off viruses. Many concerns have been expressed about immunity against COVID-19 not lasting. We learn more and more about the virus as the days pass but there is still so much we don't know.
A nurse was arrested in Palermo, Sicily, for pretending to administer a Covid-19 vaccine to consenting patients, in particular to two spouses. In the video surveillance images, the nurse empties the content of a syringe into a gauze before giving the injection. IMAGES
Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) has tested positive for COVID-19 after sheltering in place with fellow lawmakers. Business Insider reports the 75-year-old cancer survivor is starting her third term. She announced her diagnosis on Twitter early Monday afternoon. Watson Coleman tweeted that she'd sheltered in place at the Capitol during Wednesday's attack, with 'several colleagues who refused to wear masks.' Another representative said last week that 'about half' of the 300 or 400 lawmakers who crowded into a secure location during the siege refused to wear masks. Watson Coleman says she's isolating at home, and while she's experiencing mild symptoms, she remains in good spirits.
