Port-au-Prince, Feb 8 (EFE).- The Haitian opposition challenged the authority of President Jovenel Moïse on Monday by declaring the end of his mandate and appointing an interim president, a day after the government denounced an alleged coup plot.The new president recognized only by the opposition is Judge Joseph Mécène Jean Louis of the country's Supreme Court, amid a growing dispute over when Moïse's term ends. In a video statement, 72-year-old Judge Joseph Mecene Jean-Louis, says he "accept(s) the choice of the opposition and civil society, to serve (his) country as interim president for the transition" after Haitian opposition parties named the top judge as interim leader as the latest attempt to oust President Jovenel Moise, whose term they say has expired. The prosecutor also summoned the business moguls Réginald Boulos and Dimitri Vorbe, as well as four of the chiefs police and military responsible for presidential security. A Russian court sentences top human rights campaigner Oleg Orlov to two and a half years in jail for denouncing Russia's offensive against Ukraine. The judge finds Orlov guilty for "committing a crime under article 280" ("calls for extremist activity") and orders "imprisonment for a period of two years and six months."
