World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas says greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere reached new record levels last year, in a stark warning to the COP26 summit about worsening global warming. COP26, the UN Climate Change Conference, is being held in Glasgow from October 31 to November 12. SOUNDBITE
The head of the World Meteorological Organization Petteri Taalas says levels of carbon dioxide, one of the most common greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, hit a record high last year. The WMO's main annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin listed the atmospheric concentration of CO2 in 2018 at 407.8 parts per million, up from 405.5 parts per million (ppm) in 2017. SOUNDBITE

Swiss startup company Climeworks launched a factory which extracts carbon dioxide from the air, stores it underground, and sells it to paying customers in a bid to tackle climate change and global carbon emissions. The Climeworks plant is the first commercial project that will remove CO2 by drawing ambient carbon dioxide from the air using direct air capture technology.
President Obama signed an executive order that sets a goal for the U.S. government to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2025. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
