If you're unlucky enough to need a bed in an intensive care unit for COVID-19, cross your fingers that you'll get a bed at the right time. That's because ICU patients treated during periods of increased demand are almost twice as likely to die compared to those treated in low-demand periods. UPI reports intensive care units operating at 75% to 100% capacity were classified as 'high demand.' 'Low demand' was classified at less than 25% of capacity. The study showed patients in ICUs operating at high demand had a 94% higher risk for death compared to those in facilities operating at low demand. Hospitals in many parts of the country have reported being overwhelmed with patients requiring ICU treatment during the pandemic. Research suggests up to 30% of COVID-19 patients require treatment in the ICU, with many needing mechanical ventilator support to breathe.
The pandemic prompted the IRS to delay the federal tax deadline this year — for payment and filing — to July 15. A tax extension gives you an extra six months to file your return beyond the original April deadline. However, the extension timeline remained the same. According to Business Insider, the deadline to file a 2019 tax return for individual taxpayers with extensions is October 15, 2020. Remember, unless you've worked out a payment plan with the IRS, payments are usually due by the original deadline, not the extension deadline. However, military personnel in combat zones and people in federally declared disaster areas aren't subject to the October 15th deadline.
Between COVID-19 and various efforts across the country to make it downright difficult to vote, the challenges of voting are becoming increasingly obvious. Following the lead of major retails, US tech giants like Twitter and Salesforce are giving their employees Election Day off in order to vote. According to Business Insider, rideshare company Uber is giving employees the day off as part of their 'Get Out the Vote' effort. Uber is providing links to voter registration sites through its app, and will assist in getting voters to the polls on election day. Other companies, like Apple and Facebook, are encouraging employees to volunteer to be poll workers.
For the tens of millions who have lost their jobs in the wake of the pandemic, life at home has also changed dramatically for millions of Americans. According to Business Insider contributor Rebecca Chamaa, there are ways to keep your grocery bill under control, even if eating out is no longer an option. First, start with shopping by list, not by impulse. Plan your meals and shop accordingly. Pick recipes that use what you've already got. Become a big fan of leftovers. Freeze excess portions, and dub one night a week 'Leftover Buffet.' Finally, check expiration dates. Make soup stock from vegetables before they go off. Buy foods just about to go off from the bargain rack, and use immediately.
