The United States vetoes a Security Council vote on a Palestinian bid for full United Nations membership. The draft resolution, which was introduced by Algeria and "recommends to the General Assembly that the State of Palestine be admitted to membership of the United Nations," received 12 votes in favor, two abstentions and one against. The European Commission announces it is clearing a 50-million-euro payment to the Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, which was under review following Israeli claims its staff participated in Hamas's October 7 attack. Commission spokesman Eric Mamer tells reporters the funds would be "implemented through international partners, such as, for example, the Red Cross and the Red Crescent." SOUNDBITE
The Palestinian envoy to the United Nations Riyad Mansour calls Washington's veto of a Security Council push for a ceasefire "absolutely reckless and dangerous." "It is not Israel that should be protected by the veto.
