IVF for single women: Being a single mother, by choice

Description

Making IVF fertility treatment available to single women and lesbian couples was one of French President Emmanuel Macron's campaign promises, but it's yet to become a reality. The legislation was initially approved by the lower house of parliament but rejected by the Senate, where the right-wing opposition has a majority. Every year, around 3,000 women in France who wish to undergo IVF, but are not in a relationship with a man, travel to other European countries where the procedure is available. But this option comes at a significant financial cost. FRANCE 24's Claire Paccalin and Eléonore Vanel went to meet two of these single mothers.

It took divorced teacher Mahshid Akrami Puya more than six months to rent an apartment in Tehran. She ended up asking her father for help in dealing with real estate agents and, in the end, they came to the conclusion that it was necessary to lie to get the landlord to agree. FOOTAGE OF THE CITY OF TEHRAN, INLCUDING STATEMENTS FROM DIVORCED TEACHER MAHSHID AKRAMI PUYA TRANSLATION-Its a traditional society where a single woman or a divorced woman experiences a lot of social discrimination, it is a serious problem because normally landlords have conditions were they won't rent a house to a divorced woman or a single woman, because they think a woman should be with a man or a woman is not capable of renting alone.
