France secularism law: Govt mulls draft bill targeting religious extremism

Description

President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday seeks his cabinet's blessing for draft legislation combatting "radical Islamism" after a spate of attacks, which critics fear risks targeting all Muslims. Macron argues the legislation is needed to shore up France's staunchly secular system but the plan has further stirred up social tensions over the consequences for Europe's largest Muslim community. FRANCE 24's French Politics Editor Marc Perelman explains.

Today we are going to find a series of unbalanced people who are going to seek legitimacy for their actions under the pretext of religion. This is how we have seen it with the massacre in Norway, with more than 70 deaths at the hands of a Christian fanatic."-SABINE THILLAYE, MEMBER OF THE FRENCH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY:"We could not focus on a single cult, but we had to pay attention to financing, to see where the financing of some comes from, the associations, forcing them precisely to have a letter of principles (republicans), to have a sort control over what it is happening, especially when we talk about sports clubs with young people. An important issue is also home instruction."
